Winstock 2007
Winstock Country Music Festival
So you're a City Slicker with country roots eh? I found out after a few years in Mpls that you can take the girl out of the honkytonk but you can't take the honkytonk out of the girl; at least that's my story and I'm stickin' to it! (Okay enough puns). As much as I love getting all gussied up for a night out in the big city, there's nothing like rolling down all your windows and cruising to some Dixie Chicks on a gravel road.
One of my favorite ways to get all countrified for the summer is by attending Winstock-a country music festival in my hometown, Winsted, MN. (Basically, a mini WeFest-if you don't know what that is, please, don't talk to me). All you really have to know about Winstock is that it's a really good time. The general equation for this country get together is:
beer + fried cheese curds + corn dogs + kettle corn + more beer + watching minors get arrested + more beer + watching a local swallow a hot dog whole (tradition) + port-a-potties + more beer + overweight people in string bikinis + all your friends + more beer + live music = Winstock.
History
Winstock was the conceptualization of locals from Winsted. As the story goes, the local Catholic school in Winsted needed to find a way to bring in more money to keep the school afloat. So one lovely Winsted night, a few local couples, who just happened to be on the school board, went to Keg's Bar in town and heard about a country music festival somewhere in Wisconsin. The couples joked back and forth about starting their own music festival until they decided to take themselves seriously. From there, the rest is history!
The most fascinating fact about Winstock is that it is completely run by volunteers. Since day one, the planners, the organizers, and the workers for Winstock have all been volunteers from Winsted and it's surrounding communities. Security and vendors are hired obviously, but the entire organization from horn to hoof is ran by Winsted's everyday Joes.
The most important fact about Winstock is that ALL porceeds go to the Catholic school in town. They of course use the revenue to pay for the following Winstock Festival, but approximately over $100,000.00 goes to the school annually to help purchase books, supplies, and even pay teachers salaries!
